Data Conversion
is the conversion of one form of computer data to another, the changing of bits from being in one format to a different one, usually for the purpose of application interoperability or capability of using new features. At the simplest level, data conversion can be exemplified by conversion of a text file from one character encoding to another. Or data conversion is defined as the modification of existing data to enable it to operate with similar functional capability in a different environment.
Task on implementing new Data Entry System
1.) Develop data conversion plan.
2.) Identify interfaces, both input and output.
3.) Define functions and data needed in the data entry system.
4.) Determine security rights.
5.) Perform risk assessment.
6.) Develop risk management plan.
7.) Determine data conversion requirements.
8.) Ensure integrity of edits and validations.
9.) Establish and test set-up data and configurations.
Scope of the Project
Prior to proceeding on to the data conversion process, the scope of the project needs to be determined. The scope of the project will determine the cost, length of time for the conversion, and the number of personnel or contractors involved. Answering the following questions may be useful for determining the scope.
1.) What are the outputs of the current system?
2.) Are there new data requirements that the new data entry system must meet?
3.) What are the priorities and risks with the data conversion?
4.) How will continuity be maintained during the conversion?
5.) Are adequate funds available for the project?
6.) Are qualified staff dedicated to the project?
7.) How much time will be required to complete the data conversion strategy that has been chosen?
